Fedora Directory Server Inclusion

It would be nice if a native Ubuntu package could be made for the Fedora Directory Server.

Whiteboard

A usable and flexible directory server is a requirement for Ubuntu to fulfill certain positions in the server market. Fedora Directory Server (http://directory.fedoraproject.org/) would be a great start. OpenLDAP is nice, but lacks many of the features of FDS. Of these are ActiveDirectory replication (a great way to help businesses migrate from Windows to Linux or integrate Linux servers in a Windows environment), four-way multimaster replication (far more flexible than OpenLDAP or AD), easy setup and maintanence and more. All this and it still uses LDAP so existing LDAP tools will work with it and it can still replicate to OpenLDAP servers.

FDS is also GPL licensed. It may be in our interest to rename the package in order to guarentee ourselves the ability to patch/hack/modify the software without anyones pants getting tied in a knot over trademarks (see mozilla).

2007-05-06: Initial packaging work is underway on the 1.1 branch, which uses autotools & is FHS-compliant.

2007-09-12: the next release will use "dirsrv" as autotool package name (so also in paths etc.), maybe use this as .deb package name also ? (pixelpapst)
